New Neighborhoods Provides Care Packages To Its Residents

New Neighborhoods’ mission is to provide hope and opportunity through development and management of quality affordable housing and resident-centered services. Due to the recent pandemic our residents, like millions of other Americans, have been negatively impacted by reduced income, illness, stress and loss of loved ones.

As a show of support, we have prepared Safety and Care Packages that were delivered to each of our 426 units that provide housing for over 750 people. Our goal was to provide hard to get items, help them stretch their limited resources, and let them know that we care.

A total of 15,000lbs of food, 25,000 household items and 50,000 safety items were purchased and distributed among the care packages. These Safety and Care Packages include safety items like face masks, gloves and cleaners, as well as common food products, everyday household necessities like toilet paper, and even some activity items for the children. This week we distributed the first Safety and Care Packages to all tenants, with the intent to provide even more in the coming weeks.

The biggest challenges to making this happen was locating product, being able to afford the items, and being allowed to purchase enough of any single item to redistribute to hundreds of tenants. We acquired products from local and regional sources, we trucked items in from as far away as Texas, and even shipped in several products directly from China.

We would like to thank and recognize Congressman James Himes and Mayor David Martin for their support and time as they joined us in preparing the bags and delivering them to our tenants. We also would like to thank the Fairfield County Community Foundation as a major grant contributor to this project, the Inner-City Foundation for Charity & Education, and Union Savings Bank, which also provided sizable grants to help fund this program. In addition, we received support from Shop Rite, Trader Joe’s, and our local food bank. We’d also like to thank the staff of New Neighborhoods for their efforts in creating this wonderful program for our tenants. Thank you all!
