Stamford Community Gathers to Celebrate Summer Meals Program

As the summer meals From July 5th – July 29th 2016 NNI provided a total of 5,700 free breakfasts and lunches to residents if Martin Luther King Jr. Apartments, Marshall Commons Apartments, Renaissance Co-ops, Friendship House Apartments, Fair Street Apartments, as well as Westside Community Residents.
Local residents, tenants of New Neighborhoods, Inc. (NNI) properties, and NNI staff gathered in the community room of Martin Luther King Jr. Apartments in Stamford to celebrate the success of this year’s Summer Meals Program.
The event was held in celebration of the Summer Meals Program, which provides breakfast and lunch free of charge to individuals aged 18 and under, is federally funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is administered by the Connecticut Department of Education. To support the program in the West Side of Stamford, New Neighborhoods, Inc. has partnered with Chartwells School Dining Services of Stamford to provide 750 breakfast and 750 lunch meals per week at several New Neighborhoods, Inc. owned properties.
Everyone at the event enjoyed a baked ziti lunch while children under 18 were able to eat or take home a healthy lunch at no cost. Guests also entered a free raffle for great prizes such as:
- Two 32-Inch Televisions
- 10 Speed Bicycle
- Youth Bicycle
- Holiday Hill Tickets
- Two George Foreman Grills
- $100 off of Rent for NNI tenants
NNI invited Captain Richard Conklin of the Stamford Police Department, as the Stamford Police work closely with Martin Luther King Jr. Apartments to keep residents safe. “We are very happy to be working with Martin Luther King Apartments to be making the neighborhood safer” said Captain Conklin, “It’s great to meet the people here and we are very pleased with this event and we look forward to continue working in the park and in the neighborhood.”

“Our dedicated staff and Tenant Advocates go above and beyond for this community and events such as the Summer Meals Celebration, are a representation of that.” said NNI’s Director of Operations, Andrell Yarbrough “It’s great to see everyone here enjoying themselves around family, friends, and good food. Also, save the date for NNI’s Annual Health Fair being held on August 25th, 2016 right here at Martin Luther King Jr. Apartments.”
A tenant of MLK Apartments commented “I had a good time today and the event went well. The Summer Meals Program is a great program, so it’s all the reason to get the community out here to celebrate.”
